CENTRAL COAST AND LAKE MACQUARIE CYCLE TOUR - DAY 2

Cycling through Lake Munmorah Conservation Area
Cycling through Lake Munmorah Conservation Area

Route: The Entrance, Budgewoi, Lake Munmorah, Frazer Beach.
Distance: 27km

From the Entrance, head over the bridge on the footpath. This naturally flows into a shared pedestrian-bicycle path that follows the lake for a couple of kilometres.

Cycling through Lake Munmorah Conservation Area

Between The Entrance North and Norahville, there is a reasonable shoulder along Wilfred Drive, and in some places a cycle lane. Be prepared for a few gentle undulations. Upon reaching Norahville, look out for the dedicated cycleway, which resumes on the eastern side of the road. Noraville has a beach and a large park (with toilets) as well as a small bicycle shop.

Continue hading north through Norahville, following the cycleway as it crosses to the western side of Budgewoi Road. When the cycleway ends, follow the old Budgewoi Road, which is no longer used by traffic but is sealed and perfect for touring cyclists. The eastern side of Budgewoi has a park by the lake (with toilets) and a small shopping centre. After Budgewoi, continue heading north along Elizabeth Bay Drive as far as the township of Lake Munmorah. There is no cycleway but the traffic is not heavy outside peak holiday season.

Lake Munmorah has some shops and caravan park accommodation. A better accommodation option still, is to cycle into the Lake Munmorah Conservation Area and camp at Freemans Camping Area or Frazer Beach (book through the National Parks and Wildlife Service). The roads through the conservation area can be hilly by comparison, but reward with beautiful panoramas and stretches of coastal forest. (Note that the roads leading into the conservation area close at night time - see here for details.)

The road to Frazer Beach

Frazer Beach is a serene location outside holiday periods and is equipped with toilets, cold showers, picnic tables and campsites with coastal views. The water is not treated, so bring a filter or water purification tablets. Numbers are strictly limited so book in advance. Those who are feeling energetic should walk north along the beach to Snapper Point to admire the good coastal scenery, sea cave and interesting rock formations.
