Truth is, after dashing off some photos to the competitors the university holidays were upon us (=no students=focus on research) and reporting back to the bigger group went down the list of priorities. However, that is not to say that I don't want you all to know how it went. We had a great day, if a little on the `wintry' side, but that's what we were in it for. Indeed, run stats clearly indicate that this was the biggest Bounty field ever, thus the weather seems to have only emboldened those who would join the small group with a Bounty run to their name. The start saw a six man field (the first female competitor place is still wide open, girls) of James Bradley, Andrew Charleston, Ben Waterhouse, Alex Koch, Rob Taggart and myself. All looked in slight trepidation as the southerly wind blew, and rain showers came and went throughout our final preparations. Again, the running was superb. Even with the stormy weather, the views through the Botany NP sections were magnificent and it wasn't long till we were thumping down the small single-track on Malabar headland into Maroubra for the first (and only) supporters' stop. Soon afterwards, on our run out from Coogee, Andrew would leave us -- at the time he didn't share with us that we'd lost out to Saturday morning Latin classes -- though very soon afterwards, William Perry joined the group to boost our numbers. I'm philosophical about Andrew's departure, seeing more of the high calibre of Bounty runners in his latin than anything else; I like to compare us to the Australian rugby union tradition when it comes to on- field activity and off-field interests. From there, the run progressed through two very wet rain showers around Bronte and Bondi beaches. However, we were still on schedule as we ran through Bondi North SLSC and up the final big climb of Military Road. It was here that the sun started to poke through, good timing indeed, as some of our number were beginning to feel the full weight of the distance on their legs. Ben especially couldn't be stopped -- apparently his knee (I'm thinking of dedicating a future Bounty to Ben's knees owing to their prominence in run reportage) was of the `move it or lost it' category, meaning that the rest of us just had to fall into line behind the Running Man. As a slight twist this year, we actually ran all the way on to the South Head lighthouse area itself -- another 1.2 or so km, mind you, which was a struggle for most of us, but worth it to see a replica tri-masted ship heading into the Harbour. A nice way to finish! Till next time, happy trails, Simon. _________________________ [2] Photos from the Winter Bounty If you haven't already, have a look at the photos from the Winter Run...unfortunately, due to my eagerness to get going, after the obligatory start-line snap, I totally forgot to get the camera back of the photographer, hence, these pics are of the start/finish variety only. http://129.94.222.244/~sangus/oscar/images/050625_bountyiii.html _________________________ [3] Bounty IV -- submit your dates Well, as you may have guessed, we plan to do it all again in the Spring time. At the moment, I'm not particularly taken or otherwise by any dates in particular, but if you have preferences over the September -- October -- November months when you can't, or would really like to run the next Bounty, please just let me know. A provisional date will be floated towards the end of this month, or into early September.
